Based on Taiwanese novelist and filmmaker Gidden Ko’s semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, You are the Apple of My Eye spans the years in which the film’s protagonist, prankster student Ko Teng (played by Kai Ko), pursues Shen Chia-yi (played by Michelle Chen), the honors student Ko Teng’s friends are all in love with. The film is mostly narrated by Ko Teng, who documents the development of the relationship between himself and Chia-yi. When Ko Teng is reassigned to sit in front of Chia-yi to improve his failing grades and prevent him from fooling around during class, the two initially do not get along, as Chia-yi is disdainful of boys less intelligent than herself. However, when she accidentally leaves her English textbook at home one day and Ko Teng slips her his, taking the lecture and punishment in her stead, she begins to appreciate his generosity and spirit, despite his crude attitude. You are the Apple of My Eye is a story of the dichotomous hesitant affection and bold childishness of first relationships and explores what true love constitutes—your happiness, or that of the one you love.
